Respect, transparency and Trust
In “Living With Christ”, February 2005 edition, there is an interesting article by Bernard and Mae Daly
on page 156, entitled “Vatican II and Continuing Enculturation”. The article deals with the extent of
change in the “one, holy, catholic and apostolic” church over 20 centuries.
“There must be many changes in the culture of the church before Vatican ll teachings about
rights and roles of the laity are fully accepted and applied. The argument that Christ did not
institute a parliamentary democracy misses most of what Vatican ll taught about lay
participation. Respect (of women as of men), transparency and trust must take root in clergy
culture, as requisites of a church that is serious about all the gifts the Spirit gives to all
members. Real links of love between pastors and people are cultural requisites for necessary
new institutions.”

A modern-day bishop
On the same topic of change, here is an excerpt from an address delivered on Holy Thursday, 2003,
by Bishop Murphy, of Kerry. He told the assembled priests at the Chrism Mass that he believes “a
different and more exciting church is emerging slowly and painfully.” It was, he said, “the
kind of church envisaged by the Second Vatican Council, the kind of church needed in the
twenty-first century: a consultative, participative, learning community, where there are
different roles but all members have equal dignity and each member has a contribution to
make and an opportunity to make it.”
“AMEN!” to Bishop Murphy.

Sharing and caring
Where is your money sent?
How is your money spent?
We do share, and we do care. However we also get tired of the arrogance of non-accountability.
We have a Christian obligation to support and fund charitable endeavours. In the Lenten season, some
people are making a change in their pattern of giving, to encompass registered charities they may not
have considered before.
