Anne Hunter, Executive Director, Foodpath ______________________________________________________________________________ CRITICISM OF PRIESTS - reprinted from the parish bulletin insert of October 30th, 2005. Our Lord's revelation to Mutter Vogel "One should NEVER attack a priest, even when he's in error, rather one should pray and do penance that I'll grant him My grace again. He alone fully represents Me, even when he doesn't live after My example!” (page 29, Mutter Vogel's Worldwide Love, St. Grignion (sic) Publishing House, Altoting, (sic) South Germany (29.6.1929). When a Priest falls we should extend him a helping hand THROUGH PRAYER AND NOT THROUGH ATTACKS! "I myself will be his judge, NO ONE BUT I!" "Whoever voices judgment over a priest has voiced it over Me; child, never let a Priest be attacked, take up his defense (sic)." (Feast of Christ the King 1937) "Child, Never judge your confessor, rather pray much for him and offer every Thursday, through the hands of My blessed Mother, Holy Communion (for Him) (18.6.1939); "Never again accept an out-of-the-way word about a Priest, and speak no unkind word (about them) EVEN IF IT WERE TRUE! Every Priest is My Vicar and My heart will be sickened and insulted because of it! If you hear a judgment (against a Priest) pray a Hail Mary.” (28.6.1939) "Even if you see a Priest who celebrates the Holy Mass unworthily then say nothing about him, rather tell it to Me alone! I stand beside HIM on the altar!" "Oh pray much for MY priests, that they'll love purity above all, that they'll celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with pure hands and heart. Certainly the Holy Sacrifice is one and the same even when it is celebrated by an unworthy priest, but the graces called down upon the people is (sic) not the same!” (28. 2. 1938) Mary, Queen of Priests, pray for them. A parishioner’s letter to the Cardinal (in reference to above): 5th November 2005 It is not a matter of CRITICISM: it is a matter of CONSCIENCE. When urgent remedy is required, it cannot be shirked even if application of the treatment tests the "rules". Rather than advocate apocryphal works of dubious authenticity, we should heed the words of Jesus Christ: "Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightaway pull him out on the Sabbath day.” (Luke 14:5). Last week's bulletin contained an insert with a "revelation" to "Mutter Vogel". "Mutter Vogel" translates literally from German into English as "Mother Bird (or Hen)", but has an alternative meaning ("vogel" being "bird" or "nut") – “Crazy Mother”. Whence can we expect the next lesson - from Mother Goose? This inane drivel inserted in the bulletin is clearly bogus. How can our parish endorse a publication of such perverse material? Prayer without the application of charity is but hollow hypocrisy. Devastating scandals are rocking the Church worldwide - in Boston, Philadelphia, Ireland, and even on our own doorstep. There are links to 1414 relevant news items in: http://www.votf-atlanta.org/news/default.asp In the past, miscreants had been free to ply their perverted practices, preying on the vulnerable; while people prayed with eyes reverently shut. Today, this evil is being routed by good people, who bravely stand up and strike at this alien invasion of the Body of Christ. Otherwise, abomination continues to thrive unchecked, secure in the protection of lofty office - and should the faithful just "pray a Hail Mary"? I THINK NOT! Our parish continues to fall deeper into a quagmire of ineptitude as it suffers the inflicted wounds of division and distrust. As we flounder in a sea of neglect and indifference, is it too much to expect the application of Gospel principles? Must we now also endure questionable theology? Or should we continue to look to the group-on-the-sidewalk for our moral example and rely solely on their endurance to save our parish? Constructive criticism is a duty not to be eschewed; and it is undertaken by the brave, by the committed, by those who care. (Name withheld) ______________________________________________________________________________ MORE REACTION TO “MUTTER VOGEL” The insert in last week’s parish bulletin confirms that we have a pastor that is “in error”. The question arises: shall we “say nothing” as advocated (and become enablers), or do we have a responsibility to resist? Is it wise to take direction from a questionable “revelation” (i.e. not authenticated by the Church) that someone happens to find - or should one go to the inspired word of Scripture? I prefer Scripture. What did Christ do? Did he remain silent in the face of the errors of the Scribes and Pharisees? “Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door to the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor do you allow others to do so.” Matt.23:13 St. Paul’s first Letter to Timothy 5:19-20 tells us what to do: “Do not accept an accusation against a priest unless it is supported by two or three witnesses. If he continues to sin, rebuke him in the presence of the community”. We, by baptism and confirmation, are “consecrated to be a holy priesthood” (Lumen Gentium). We offer to God (as sacrifice in union with Christ) our joys and sufferings, our works and prayers – for His glory and our own salvation. We (and any other priest) need the vigilance of each other to remain faithful and free from “error”. We all fail. We must all forgive. BUT LET US NOT DENY THAT WE HAVE BEEN UNJUSTLY “DEEPLY WOUNDED” - FOR DENIAL PERPETUATES AND EXACERBATES THE PAIN OF THE SUFFERING. Only love and compassion, openness and acknowledgment can heal our parish.
