I am a mother of 2 boys.  I called St. Martin’s Church regarding the baptism of my oldest
child and I was told by Father at the parish that I could baptise my son but first I had to get
married were his words to me – in early October  xxxx.  I am only common law with my
husband and I know that it is against the Catholic faith but he does not believe in the
church so I am kind of stuck.  I was extremely angry and explained to another priest, and
he agreed with me that it was not my baby’s fault what my husband’s beliefs are, and he
baptised my son that same year in November.  My son now goes to xxxx  School and from
what I hear from other parents in the school most of them do not go to that parish because
they do not like the priest there.  I have only went there once for my son’s Christmas
concert and he was rude by saying that the children were “loud”.  I have never gone to
mass there even though it is my parish and I think he should be replaced with someone
who cares more for the parish and the people who would like to attend it.

Thank you

(name provided but withheld to protect the privacy of the children)

VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 12, 2004 (Zenit.org).- Here is the text of John Paul II's greeting

“The Synod of Bishops acknowledged the need today for each Bishop to develop
‘a
pastoral style which is ever more open to collaboration with all
’ ("Pastores Gregis,"
44), grounded in a
clear understanding of the relationship between the ministerial
priesthood and the common priesthood of the baptized
(cf. "Lumen Gentium," 10).
While the Bishop himself remains responsible for the authoritative decisions which he is
called to make in the exercise of his pastoral governance, ecclesial communion
also
"presupposes the participation of every category of the faithful, inasmuch as
they share responsibility
for the good of the particular Church which they themselves
form" ("Pastores Gregis," loc. cit.).

Within a sound ecclesiology of communion, a commitment to creating better structures of
participation, consultation and shared responsibility should not be misunderstood
as a concession to a secular "democratic" model of governance, but as an
intrinsic
requirement
of the exercise of episcopal authority and a necessary means of
strengthening that authority.

The exercise of the "munus regendi"*
is directed both to gathering the flock in the
visible unity of a single profession of faith lived in the sacramental communion of the
Church and
to guiding that flock, in the diversity of its gifts and callings, towards a
common goal: the proclamation of the Gospel to the ends of the earth.”

*(The pastoral "munus," pastoral action, is like a tripod. It rests on three different functions which are,
nevertheless, inseparable: the teaching function, which we call "munus docendi"; the liturgical and sacramental
function, "munus santificandi"; and the governing function, "munus regendi" which consists above all in having
the laws of the Church applied.)
